The Psychology That Leads People to Vote for Extremists & Autocrats: The Theory of Cognitive Closure

in PoliticsPsychology | November 30th, 2016.

There's a political disconnect in the United States. We have two political parties, each now living in its own reality and working with its own set of facts. The common ground between them? Next to none.

How to explain this disconnect? Maybe the answer lies in the theory of “cognitive closure”–a theory first worked out by social psychologist Arie Kruglanski back in 1989.

“People’s politics are driven by their psychological needs,” Kruglanski explains in the short documentary above. “People who are anxious because of the uncertainty that surrounds them are going to be attracted to messages that offer certainty.”

He sips a soda, then continues, “The need for closure is the need for certainty, to have clear cut knowledge. You feel that you need to stop processing too much information, to stop listening to a variety of viewpoints, and zero in on what appears to be, to you, the truth.” “The need for closure tricks your mind to believe you have the truth, even though you haven’t examined the evidence very carefully.” And that, unfortunately, can be very dangerous.

Fix the Soil, Feed the Planet, Save the World: The Power of Regeneration

b2ap3_thumbnail_Screen-Shot-2015-06-09-at-11.39.01-AM.png

“Regenerative agriculture provides answers to the soil crisis, the food crisis, the health crisis, the climate crisis and the crisis of democracy,” says Vandana Shiva

Seeking to elevate sustainable forms of agriculture such as agroecology, holistic grazing, cover cropping, permaculture, and agroforestry over industrial practices that degrade soil, introduce toxins to the food supply—and exacerbate climate change—a group of farmers, scientists, and activists are convening for the Regenerative International Conference in Costa Rica this week.

The conference, the first of a planned series of similar gatherings around the world, will focus on uniting movements, developing campaigns, and creating a global media plan to communicate specifically how restoring soil health can reverse damage to ecosystems around the world.

"This is new science that’s connecting the food issues with the climate issue, making it more and more clear that by fixing the soil, and fixing the way we produce food, we can fix the climate as well," said Ronnie Cummins, international director of the Organic Consumers Association, in a press release on Monday.

He Holds the Patent that Could Destroy Monsanto and Change the World

b2ap3_thumbnail_Screen-Shot-2015-06-08-at-4.16.49-PM.png

If there’s anything you read – or share – let this be it. The content of this article has potential to radically shift the world in a variety of positive ways.

And as Monsanto would love for this article to not go viral, all we can ask is that you share, share, share the information being presented so that it can reach as many people as possible.

In 2006, a patent was granted to a man named Paul Stamets. Though Paul is the world’s leading mycologist, his patent has received very little attention and exposure. Why is that? Stated by executives in the pesticide industry, this patent represents “the most disruptive technology we have ever witnessed.” And when the executives say disruptive, they are referring to it being disruptive to the chemical pesticides industry.

What has Paul discovered? The mycologist has figured out how to use mother nature’s own creations to keep insects from destroying crops. It’s what is being called SMART pesticides. These pesticides provide safe & nearly permanent solution for controlling over 200,000 species of insects – and all thanks to the ‘magic’ of mushrooms.

An Italian invention, WoW - Wonderful Water, is a unique water treatment technology turns any kind of water into drinkable water. There is no need for filters, chemicals or other consumables. WoW can treat any source of polluted or dirty water and turn it into clean and drinkable water.

WoW - Wonderful Water may even deal with water which is radioactively polluted and reduce the volume of the polluted water by a factor in excess of 5,000. Thus it would be well suited to deal with the water contamination issues at the crippled Fukshima nuclear power plant in Japan.

Top 5 Reasons Solar Energy Will Save the World

b2ap3_thumbnail_Screen-Shot-2014-04-24-at-1.31.51-PM.png

This post originally ran on Juan Cole’s Web page.

1.  The research and development monies now going into solar energy are great enough to fuel innovation and bring down prices rapidly.  First Solar expects solar electricity generation costs to fall from 63 cents a watt to 35 cents a watt from now through 2017!

2.  Honda is experimenting with a zero-carbon home.  It includes a direct DC recharger for an electric car so as to cut down on energy lost to heat during the DC to AC conversion.  Charging would take only 2 hours, direct from sunlight.

3. Thin-skin solar panels will be installed directly on the cars, and a canopy recharger will fill them back up.
