Repeace is an online social movement that wants to cut the ties between private interests and government with a very simple method. Repeace wants to make accountability a profitable currency, at times where institutionalized corruption has become endemic. By rallying people behind 3 positive pledges (demands) Repeace creates a market for accountability and hopes to move small-medium business to new standards of social responsibility (back off of funding elections in exchange of support). The movement is called Repeace, which means "realize peace" and is inspired by John F. Kennedy's alternative interpretation of peace, from his 1963 Commencement Speech at American University. Repeace is not only a relevant project and a suggested solution, but the reflection of the current nations revolutions, which are, in essence, demands of accountability.
Behind 3 self empowering pledges there are several missions of the Repeace.com project.
The missions are:
- Empower and unite a very divided society in the common cause of fighting constitutionalized corruption in a positive, proactive way.
- Unite all activists behind the notion that all social activism realizes peace.(Peace is seen as the absence of fear and not just the opposite of wars)
- Unite all people as CUSTOMERS and let the institution of BUSINESSES know what WE want, by creating a measurable demand for sustainable, quality products, and most important to demand them to back off of lobbying for influence in government.
- Unite all citizens as a non partisan force and let all current and new representatives know what people now want: transparency and accountability, without compromises.
- Unite all humans as a new global purchase power telling all worlds governments that freedom of expression is non negotiable. This entity can be mobilized at later point for positive campaigns of support (financial support) or massive boycott, as an alternative option to people power.
Repeace.com will be creating and measuring those demands and holding them up to our institutions. The demands for accountability also reflect John F. Kennedy " series of concrete actions and agreements" of which he spoke about in his Commencement speech at American University in 1963:
“I’m talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children – not merely peace for Americans, but peace for all men and women – not merely peace in our time, but peace for all time.”
JFK also said:
“Let us focus instead on a more practical, more attainable peace – based not on a sudden revolution in human nature, but on a gradual evolution in human institutions – on a series of concrete actions and effective agreements which are in the interest of all concerned.”
“A series of concrete actions and effective agreements, which are in the interest of all concerned,” are what Repeace is proposing and those agreements are based on the need for more accountability.
Politicians and corporations ignore the demand for accountability because they profit from doing so. They all line their pockets by being dishonest and helping each other. Think of the old adage, “You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours.” But what if the public demand for accountability was measured and held up to all institutions like a big mirror? That’s what Repeace.com wants to do. We want to help the collective set new rules for accountability, transparency, and social responsibility and to define accountability as the currency to be traded by institutions.
Timeline: 2013 (Updated March15th)
Repeace Iceland is currently under development. Updates on repeace.com will soon reflect the newly incorporated team of repeacers from former and current Occupy WS movement. Writers are added to the staff and news will be soon updated regularily on the page.
A new Repeace video is ready for publication. The video will first be used to vet key organizers and authors before publication.
The networking on Facebook has grown and new communities have been added. Activists from all over the world have expressed the wish to promote the idea and start sharing relevant news about their nations struggle for accountable institutions. Noteworthy are the growing UK community and the new Repeace America Latina that focuses on relevant news of the struggle for democracy in Latin America and Mexico. Due to the visionary nature of the project, Repeace USA has first to reach critical mass, via grassroots activism, networking and vetting of progressive public figures and existing organizations.
Other nations' platforms are being planned (Depending on course of action). Several nations have asked for a platform for them, but repeace.com needs first to reach tipping point and reach circa 50'000 US votes.
Expansion to a more sophisticated social network and an international news organization will follow.
